A Reminder to be Mindful and Present in my Life

I often find that I get frustrated about things that are completely outside of my control, and when I do become aware of this I feel silly and estranged that I gave such matters my undivided attention for so long. This audio course did a great job of reminding me of the simple importance that lies within restful sleep and the true power of my attention.

What he has to say about sleep makes a lot of sense, and in retrospect, I can look at many instances that occurred in the past where my lack of sleep endowed me with lingering negativity and irritable moods. These occurrences I speak of were typically when I had drank too much alcohol the night prior or taken substances that impaired my ability to sleep.

He mentions how the less that we take care of ourselves, the less good we feel. It is such common sense that it almost sounds stupid when you utter it, but it retains so much truth. Exercise, sleep, and a healthy diet will not only affect one’s body more positively, but will affect one’s mental health and spiritual health as well. After all, every facet of our beings are connected, and our minds and spirits are expressed through our physical bodies.

Another point made throughout the audio course is the power of attention. Whatever we pay attention to, is what will become manifested in our life. For instance, if you spend your time and attention on hating things, then you will subsequently welcome more hatred into your life. I forget this far too often, especially when profound feelings of sadness and despair arise and I find myself paralyzed with hopelessness. In these moments, it almost seems impossible to just change your mind and place your attention on more positive things, however, shifting one’s attention does not mean resisting said feelings, but choosing not to let them determine who you are.

The lessons within this course are wonderful reminders of how to navigate our everyday lives more mindfully and with as little misery as possible. If you feel that you struggle with being present, don’t hesitate to listen to the wisdom within this podcast.
