Anne Kelly’s Course on the Science of Happiness Made Me Pretty Happy
I really enjoyed listening to Anne talk and part of the reason why could be just because I love her Irish accent but mostly because her course was very uplifting. Anne talks about all aspects of happiness — what it is, how it works, and ways you can achieve it.
There are a few exercises to help you understand the foundation of happiness and my favorite was the one that asked you to hand-write a letter to someone that has helped you in the past, that has been supportive and that you’re grateful for. Oftentimes, in the midst of the chaos, we forget to tell people just how important and amazing they are. Not only that, but we tend to overlook their importance because it’s not something we really sit down to think about. This exercise forced me to acknowledge that someone else is valuable and for some reason, letting them know that and seeing their reaction gave me such a great feeling inside. Also, let’s not ignore the part where the letter must be hand-written. There’s something so beautiful, intimate and enchanting about a hand-written letter in this age of technology. Anne definitely knows what she’s talking about.
I like how she doesn’t try to rob you of your negative feelings. She understands that they’re there, they’re bound to happen because disappointment is part of life and instead she shows you how to deal with them appropriately. You have to see these emotions for what they are so that you’re more self-aware and are able to consciously move past them.
Anne mentions several ways to relieve stress which allows for a better mood overall. I love the idea of spending more time in nature. It’s something I don’t get to do much of anymore but it’s something that really boosts my mood whenever I do. It was nice to be reminded that something as simple as going to the beach and listening to the waves crashing on the shoreline and breathing in that salty air can be so pleasurable.
I definitely liked this course. It was simple and to the point but also enlightening and helps you gain perspective on things. Life is too short to take everything so seriously. Have fun and bring those happy thoughts forward because that’s what sustains you.
