Confidence and calm as a skill
Mindmekka is a great start for anyone who needs guidance on building confidence and a sense of calm from within, no matter what kind of stress is presented at any given moment. Modern life makes it very easy for us to become buried in stressors. Work, school, horrific stories on the news every day, toxic online communities– all of this makes it easy to become somewhat addicted to anxiety because this is all we know.
That sounds weird, but it’s something that is very unconscious in a lot of us. Any moment of quiet, the silence in our minds instantly fills with worries. Will I pass the exam? Will I be able to pay my bills? These are the things we worry about today instead of “will I be able to hunt enough Woolly Mammoths to feed my tribe?” In those times, worrying about the future was purely about survival. Sure, paying bills today is about survival too–but as yourself this: does it benefit you to be worried literally sick about it every single month? What could life be like if you were confident enough to know that you were going to be okay, and you could get more done without spending most of the day in a state of fight-or-flight because of the human construct of money?
Of course, we don’t want to be anxious, it’s a miserable way to live. Not only does it wear us down emotionally and mentally, but the constant surging of stress hormones depletes our bodies. Stress and anxiety can be as exhausting as running a race, and in addition to things like supplements and meditation, it’s helpful to use affirmations in order to challenge negative beliefs and thought patterns that lock us into panic responses.
Integrative medicine is important, but all too often doctors are very quick to prescribe medication to us in order to manage our stress response. Medication is really important to me in emergencies, as someone with a lot of trauma still in the nervous system, but I can’t tell you how many times doctors prescribed dangerous medication to me that made me even sicker when they perhaps should have an integrative approach.
