David Tuffley’s Take on Happiness is Inspiring!
This course on true and lasting happiness is a great listen, even if you are already happy. In fact, I didn’t even know I was truly happy until I heard it! If you don’t feel happy, it’s a good idea to listen to the ideas discussed here on how to reach true happiness. If you don’t feel unhappy at all but never considered that you had already achieved true and lasting happiness, give this a listen and you might be surprised when you realize what you may have already accomplished.
If you’ve ever taken a psych course or done any reading on the subject, you have probably already heard of Maslow’s hierarchy of needs. This course is centered on that theory. Represented as a pyramid, at the bottom of the pyramid is the most basic of our needs: the physiological ones, such as food, water, air, clothing and shelter. At the top of the pyramid is self-actualization which is a person’s full potential and the realization of that potential, which most of us have come to know as enlightenment or an awakening. In order to achieve self-actualization, you have to make your way from the bottom of the pyramid, satisfying needs along the way so that you are able to be in right state of mind to achieve your full potential.
There are many ways that we can be kept from reaching our full potential and sometimes it is because we still haven’t reached a complete understanding of how the world works, how we work, how life works. Many of us rely on material things to define our happiness. Some of us are afraid of doing what makes us happy for fear of not being accepted by others. We conform and act the way we believe we should act due to peer pressure and social norms. We aren’t true to ourselves and aren’t honest with ourselves about who we truly are. We forget that we create our own reality. The people we surround ourselves with, the choices we make, the life we choose to lead — a lot of times, we are in total control of these things and choose to take paths that don’t provide anything meaningful.
As David explains, only when you are able to see yourself for who you truly are, only then will you be able to see the world for what it is. If you are able to understand and accept the world as it is, take the good with the bad and keep moving forward and building the life you want to live, then you are that much closer to true happiness and reaching self-actualization. This course was full of thoughtful explanations for very abstract ideas and you will definitely feel inspired after listening to it.
