Finding inner peace is better than a pill
Living with insomnia is not really living. Watching the world do its thing in the bright morning sunshine isn’t a chipper experience when you’re on your third day of zero sleep. I know this all too well, because I have spent my life struggling with bouts of sleeplessness. When it starts, it doesn’t let go.
It isn’t any easier to have to take a sleep aid every night. I have never liked the way those things affect me. When the dog starts scratching at the door at 2 a.m., I can’t get up to take care of it. And if there was an emergency, I would never know it. Besides, I never seem to dream when I use a sleeping pill. It seems like my mind shuts off, then suddenly it’s time for work.
I was ready to try something new, something different, and that’s when I found Melody Litton’s “Seven Days to Blissful Sleep.” As I wasn’t in the mood to attempt some life-changing therapy marathon, a simple instructional course sounded good to me. From the start, I decided to just go with the flow, whether any of it made sense to me or not. I began by ceasing to say that I can’t sleep. I began saying I used to have trouble sleeping. I really believe that primed me for a change.
I continued on, following the course day by day. I made a God Box, even though I’m not a church goer, and began to use it. I released my frustration with my insomnia symptoms to my God Box. Now, I never would have thought that such a simple solution would help, but it really does. When I would start thinking I wasn’t going to get any sleep, I would remind myself that I put that anxiety in the box. The positive self-talk just seemed to allow me to relax, take it easy, and somehow to fall asleep more easily. I was hooked.
As the course winds down, asking three serious questions about how I’m living my life, I realized that my lifestyle was one of the major reasons I was having trouble sleeping. I’m now making changes where I can to take better care of myself. I know now that I did not have some disease of the mind that kept me from sleeping well. I was doing it to myself all along.
