Freedom from repression is freedom towards expression

Mindmekka offers a simple start on the personal journey of healing with something that is easily accessible even to those who cannot see a therapist.

Most of us aren’t taught this from a young age, but we digest experiences just like we digest food. But, most of us don’t actually digest a lot of our experiences. We lock them away, stored in our bodies. Even every day stresses we try to wave away so we can focus on work, school, or our families or relationships. We accumulate so much emotional debris in us that ends up manifesting as inflammation, pain, and illness in the body, obviously including the brain. Because we choose not to reflect on things that are unpleasant, we build it up inside us to the point of bursting. When we burst, it’s usually catastrophic. We may have a breakdown, we may take it out on family or friends, or we may try to cope by drinking or finding other addictive and maladaptive ways to numb ourselves.

So how do we allow ourselves to process these experiences, especially traumatic ones we really don’t want to bring up? It might sound absurdly simple: reflection. Really? Reflection is all it takes? Well, to start, yes. This doesn’t mean to re-traumatize yourself. But think of a tangled knot. You’ve got to work your way to the center, bit by bit, to get there and release the constriction, right?

Reflection works in the same way. And there are so many ways to reflect. Mindmekka goes over ways to reflect on your childhood, on major life change, even by learning the stories of successful people you can feel less hopeless about struggles and find the strength to stand back up again. My favorite part is that Mindmekka has a lesson about Reflection Via Songs. It really is true that we associate certain songs or albums with events and chapters of our lives. It’s a powerful way to time travel and heal, to reflect with the aid of music.
