It Doesn’t Take a Genius to Be a Genius!
Richard Wilkins heads the UK Ministry for Inspiration, so he knows what he’s talking about in that field. Here, Tom Cassidy talks to him about accessing your inner genius. The subject could be pretentious, but Wilkins is an incredibly entertaining personality. He presents the subject in an excited, accessible way. I mean, I know I’m no genius, but that’s his whole thing: you don’t need to be a genius all the time. It’s not even a good thing to be a genius all the time — it can keep you from functioning socially. You just need to know how to tap into it.
Wilkins knows the secret: it’s about becoming more aware of yourself and the world around you and using your abilities for the good of others instead of for selfish reasons. You need to put aside your past and connect with your desire to help others. That helps you unlock your better self. If you’re doing the right thing for the right reasons, the inspiration will come. Wilkins himself doesn’t claim to be a genius. He’s just someone who has done a lot of study into this and wants to help others with it. And he certainly presents it with enthusiasm.
It takes a little bit to wrap your head around what he’s saying. I’m still trying to internalize it, myself. His advice on helping you ignore the voice in your head that tells you that you can’t do something rings true, however. It basically boils down to overcoming self-doubt and changing your actions so that they help others. That’s something we can all agree with. With that as the base, Wilkins will help you realize how you can make that happen for yourself. And that’s a worthwhile goal for anyone.
