Recovery Connections I Needed to Remember Today
This course starts out with something called A Crazy and Wonderful Life. It brought me to tears laughing in many parts. It shouldn’t be funny but the truth is I related to his story in so many ways. Sometimes the truth is funny and is the best medicine too.
In the second part, A Powerful Change of Heart, he mentions that it is alright to laugh and cry. This resonated with every part of me in my recovery. There are far too many times that I hold in my feelings and don’t let myself cry. After I finally let it all go and start crying, I actually feel so much better.
In part 3, I was surprised to hear that she says she was probably a couple years sober before she fully conceded she had alcoholism. I was blown away when hearing this. I truly thought it was only me that took that long to convince myself fully that was my case and situation. It seemed so much easier when I saw others saying they were alcoholics than it was for me.
I am so glad there is a section in this course called Abstinence from Alcohol vs. Recovery. For the first year of my sobriety, I wasn’t so sure that recovery was anything more than just stopping the consumption of alcohol. I figured that was all that was needed. Today when hearing this, I needed the reminder again. There are times in my recovery I have forgotten that I need to do the work and not just stay sober. When I am not doing the work, it becomes more and more difficult to stay sober. This is something that should be shared with all recovering addicts.
During this course, one man says alcohol dominated everything in my life. I can’t begin to say how close to home this hits. From the time I was a child and my mother drank a lot to the time I started drinking to when I quit, alcohol took over my life as well.
Getting sober and in recovery is a huge feat for anyone. I think that any addict or alcoholic should hear what these speakers have to say. It could help them to connect with the truth as it has done for me.
