You Just Have To Do What It Takes For You

This is a collection of 13 audios of The Best LGBTQ, Foreign and Native American speakers, sharing their stories of recovery in AA. These audios are in English, French, Hindi and Spanish. Sadly, I do not speak any of the other languages and I wish we could have been provided with translated texts of those recordings to read what those speakers said.

It doesn’t matter if you are gay or straight, rich or poor, black or white, addiction is a disease that will befall any type of personality. My name is Betty, I’m an alcoholic. I am 49 years old, a single mother of 4 and 7 years sober. During my treatment in rehab, I met so many people from all walks of life. Humans of all types: men, women, girls, boys, doctors, lawyers, PhD Holders, teens, elderly people, black, brown, white, all of them in rehab for the same reason — addiction to alcohol or hard drugs. My last born was 6 months old and I’d just come out of a jail cell where I’d spent the night because I got into a physical fight with my sister after coming home completely drunk and out of my mind. So, I had to make a choice, go to rehab or spend a considerable amount of time in jail. So I chose rehab. Thankfully! Anyhow, as I did my program, everyone’s story was different, but so similar — if that makes sense.

Page 52 of The Big Book– Bedevilments explains it every well. Our addiction stories were varied and different but all of us felt the same in our addiction experience. It didn’t matter what our back-ground was, apart from abusing our drug of choice to the point of oblivion, we all had problems with personal relationships; we couldn’t control our emotions; we were constantly miserable and depressed, we couldn’t make a living, we felt useless, were constantly afraid, were always unhappy and could never seem to be of real help to others, our lives were unmanageable and real help comes from a higher power.

Coming out of denial and realizing these things about you and actually internalizing and working the steps and most importantly, doing it for yourself — not your kids, not your parents or spouse, for you alone, does the program work and the promises become a reality. Some of us worked it. Some of us didn’t and relapsed. It just had to be up to you to do what it takes for yourself. Thank you AA 12 Steps because today, I am happy, joyous and free!
