As a recovering porn addict, this is exactly what I needed to hear
Let me begin by saying, Noah Church is a complete and totally bad ass. I absolutely love the way that he approaches things with a loving and caring perspective that is rooted in his honorable values. With that being said, this podcast series is very intriguing and is exactly what I needed to hear. As I mentioned above in the title, I have struggled with porn addiction since I was a boy, however, I am aware that it is no different than my affinity for drugs, alcohol, promiscuity, or even video games. All these things are merely escaping methods and are not the actual problems.
Recently I have not had as many urges to watch porn, and I have definitely noticed more of the ‘superpowers,’ as he calls them, arising in my behavior. I found myself baffled when listening to the particular podcast about the intersection of porn and feminism, and how some women in the industry actually attest that porn makes them feel empowered, independent, and strong as women who can do what they want with their bodies. I found this to be very intriguing, especially because it seems like most pornography is very patriarchal, inconsiderate, and violent, however, who am I to say if they feel empowered or not? It just surprised me, that’s all.
Porn Addiction Can Be Overwhelming, But There is A Solution
When he talks about being honest with one’s partner in light of past mistakes and the shame and suffering that surrounds said mistakes, it reminded me of my most recent relationship that ended in flames. Granted, there was no infidelity involved, but toward the end I found myself watching porn, closing off my communication, and spiraling out of control with my depression and loss of purpose. Porn seems to be, merely a symptom and reflection of my internal wounds and false beliefs; that I am not worthy of love or affection, that I am unattractive, that I am not an adequate man. When I lose my footing, it seems that these falsities arise, and even though it would have been great to have this resource back in Peru, I am grateful to have it now.
Porn isn’t damaging for everyone, but it can be for some. So, if you find that your porn usage is distracting you from your life, love, relationships, and blocking you from being more creative and successful, I highly recommend giving Noah Church a listen. His words and insight will certainly shine some light on the darkness that you are afraid to see.
