Coloring Helped me Recover from Stress
After my nervous breakdown, I desperately searched for a way to both control my stress and make sense of the world. I’d heard about the beneficial properties of art therapy, but I dismissed it. All those adult coloring books and such seemed like a trend. And one that I had no interest in participating in. I had enjoyed some of Libby Seery’s previous courses, however, and when I saw that she had one on that very subject, I figured there wouldn’t be any harm in giving it a try. I’m glad I did! Far from the waste of time I was expecting, I found an engaging, comprehensive guide to using art as a way to combat the darkness inside.
Thankfully, Libby never makes you feel like a child. Her cheerful, common sense analytical approach helps guide you through a variety of lessons on how to get in touch with your inner creativity and use that to assist in the healing process. For those of us like myself with no discernible artistic talent, she thankfully includes detailed walk-throughs to guide you through each exercise. She still leaves plenty of room for you to express your own creativity (which is the point of the entire thing, of course), but having her calm voice there to keep you focused on the task at hand really makes all the difference.
It’s not like I magically learned to draw, of course. It would take an actual wizard to make that happen. That’s not the point. This course really helped me access a lot of feelings that I had otherwise been neglecting, making it possible to keep a lot of frustrations under control. I’m glad I got over my initial skepticism and really embraced the healing power of art therapy.
