Letting go is not just for princesses
“I have to just let it go” is a mantra we all struggle to embody. We are riddled with all kinds of attachments and hangups in life. We grasp and cling to things that literally make us sick. Whether it’s something that is bothering us about a coworker, a personal failing, something a partner said, or even something that happened in childhood.
We don’t let these things go and allow ourselves to digest the experience. Emotional constipation is no joke. Not only does it create blockages in our energy centers, or chakras, but it can cause all kinds of problems in our personal lives when we’re so full of unresolved feelings that we cannot stop sabotaging our own lives.
Giovanni’s lessons on letting go are broken down into chapters to better help us understand, firstly, the different types of attachments: past hurt, past regret, and future uncertainty. This is the first time I’ve heard of attachments broken down into those categories and I had no idea the impact it would have in helping me understand my attachments. The past hurt can come in the form of trauma, which is straightforward. But it’s the thoughts and feelings that come with it such as wondering how something like that could happen to us and feeling angry at the injustice.
Whether the event is big or small, or happened a lot or just once, these emotions are powerful and have the ability to become stuck in our nervous system as a toxic feedback loop. As resentment, hatred, revenge, shame, and guilt. A big part of healing is accepting that this happened and that it wasn’t your fault, to forgive yourself, and change your relationship to what happened.
He continues to break down the other types of attachments in such a calm way that really helped me to deep dive into my own feelings and allow myself to be guided through the process of letting go. Because it is a process, not something that will happen with a song and dance. (I wish!)
